  • On 26 January 2015, asteroid 2004 BL86 will get within 745,000 miles (approx 1.2 million KM) from Earth, which is very close for such a large asteroid!
  • This is the closest BL86 will get to Earth for at least the next 200 years.
  • Although BL86 will travel at 35,000 MPH (approx 56,000 KM per hour), it should be visible to skywatchers with a decent pair of binoculars, as it measures about a third of a mile wide (approx. 500 metres!)
  • Earthsky.org reports that BL86 should be visible in the sky near the constellation Cancer.
  • NASA states that a visit from such a large chunk of space rock will not be seen again until 2027 when 1999 AN10 is expected to fly by.
  • BL86 was first discovered in 2004.
