- Inspired by Tom Hanks’ character in Forrest Gump, Michigan man Barclay Oudersluys has set out to run 3,200 miles (5,070 km) across the USA in less than 100 days!
- Barclay is hoping to use ‘Project Gump’ to raise $10,o00 for the Hall Steps Foundation, which is a group dedicated to fighting poverty by improving health.
- Just like in Forrest Gump, Barclay’s run started at the Santa Monica Pier and will end at the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine on 16 August 2015, shortly before he us due to start law school at the University of California, Berkeley. If you feel like Barclay is overachieving – you’re right, as he already has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering.
- Barclay will cross 14 states during his route.
- While many have supported Barclay on his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, some have expressed concern as to the toll on his body, given the constant stress it is under. Barclay usually wakes at 6am and stops at midday to 2pm, running between 30 and 33 miles a day, rain or shine.
- Barclay says he generally sleeps in the back of his van (that friends drive around for him) or at hotels/homes, adding that he has become “creative” in the hygiene department and is now an expert at “baby wipe showers”.
- As at day 63, Barclay has run approximately 2,000 miles.
- While no celebrations are planned, Barclay says it would be “cool” if anyone wants to meet him at the finish line!
