- Elon Musk has requested FCC permission to allow SpaceX to shoot a constellation of small satellites into low Earth orbit to create a space internet.
- It’s reported that these satellites would enable signals to be beamed to all corners of the planet, bringing internet to billions who do not presently have such access.
- According to the billionaire’s maths, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket would need to shoot approximately 4,000 satellites to achieve his goal, given that the signal from low-orbiting satellites won’t be able to cover as much of the planet as traditional satellites, which sit much higher above the planet.
- The costs of such an endeavour are likely to be astronomical, noting that Bill Gates abandoned an attempt to create a low Earth orbit internet in the 1990s due to excessive costs.
- If Musk is successful, it is reported that the service could be up and running in as few as 5 years.
