Stargazers treated to “blood moon”

Stargazers were treated to a full lunar eclipse producing a "blood moon"
Posted by: admin , October 9, 2014
  • Last night, stargazers in Australia, Asia and the Americas were treated to a rare lunar eclipse producing a “blood moon”.
  • The phenomenon is caused by the Earth passing between the Moon and the Sun, which blocks all direct sunlight to the Moon and gives it a shade of red due to light reflections from the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • NASA said the event was not visible in Africa or Europe.
  • The eclipse was the second of 4 total lunar eclipses, the first being on 15 April of this year. The next two eclipses will be on 4 April and 28 September 2015.
