Social media is changing the way we get our news

Social media is changing the way we get our news, with an increasing number of people being informed by Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

  • Social media is changing the way we get our news, with an increasing number of people being informed by Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
  • According to a study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, more than 51% of online users get their news from social media at least once a week!
  • It’s believed this is largely driven by an increase in the use of smart phones.
  • The trend is particularly relevant in developing countries where there is limited access to independent news sources.
  • Not surprisingly, the most prominent group was the 18-24 demographic, 28% of which say their main source of news is social media (only 24% said TV).
  • Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are the top social media news platform.
  • Of course, this trend is disruptive to traditional news businesses and formats, which negatively impacts their revenue streams.
  • The report is based on a YouGov survey of more than 50,000 online news consumers in 26 countries (linked below).
