- Two men were reportedly arrested for ‘manspreading’ when New York Police found they were taking up too much space on the subway by occupying more than one seat
- This follows a subway etiquette program launched in January 2015 by New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), which included a poster that read: “Dude, stop the spread…please”.
- The MTA’s rules of conduct prohibit people from occupying more than one seat when it interferes with the operation of the Authority’s transit system or the comfort of other passengers.
- However, it is reported that the two men in the present matter were given an ACD, which means the charges will be dropped if they avoid being arrested for a period of time.
- Manspreading is a term coined by internet users for men who occupy more than one seat on public transport by sitting with their knees wide apart.
