  • It has been found that “intergalactic” signals detected at Australia’s Parkes telescope since 1998 were actually caused by a microwave in the facility’s kitchen.
  • PhD student Emily Petroff set up a monitor and found that opening a microwave while it is still in use could trigger the reception of the mysterious “fast radio bursts”, known as perytons.
  • It’s reported that the signals, which have baffled astrophysicists since 1998, were only ever detected during business hours!
  • The Parkes Telescope was made famous by the Australian film ‘The Dish’, a comedy starring Sam Neill about a series of mishaps leading up to Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk.
