- A group of friends built an island off the coast of New Zealand’s north island so that they could drink in ‘International waters’, thereby getting around a New Year’s Eve alcohol ban!
- The ban prevented the consumption of alcohol on the beach or other public places at Tairua estuary on the Coromandel Peninsula, with fines of $227 for anyone found in breach of the rule.
- Not to be stopped, the friends waited until low tide to build the makeshift island, which was large enough for an esky (chilly bin, for my Kiwi friends) and a picnic table.
- Once on their island, the men drank and watched the fireworks, with their creation still standing in the New Year.
- The act of ingenuity earned the men praise from the police commander inspector, as well as Thames-Coromandel Mayor Sandra Goudie, who told Stuff that she loved the “inventive nature” of the people of Coromandel.
- Gotta love the Kiwis!
