  • Ur def gna feel old 2 know this!
  • SMS text messaging is now 25 years old, with the first message sent by engineer Neil Papworth on 3 December 1992!
  • As handsets could only receive (but not send) messages at that time, the 22-year-old engineer used a computer to write his first message, “merry Christmas” (and not Merry Xmas).
  • SMS stands for short message service.
  • Did you know that Twitter’s 140 character limit is based on the original 160 character limit for text messages? Twitter reserves 20 characters for a user address, and the rest for the tweet.
  • In 2016, approximately 560 billion text messages were sent worldwide every month!
  • However, it appears that text messaging reached its peak in 2012, with the rise of iMessage, Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp, the latter of which delivered 55 billion messages PER DAY in July 2017.
  • Do you remember your first SMS?
