- A French court has ruled that a ‘Mona Lisa’ smile is not permitted on ID cards, after a Frenchman fought for the right to be cheerful.
- The Paris Court of Appeals held that people must have a natural expression, which would by definition exclude an expression such as a smile.
- A French civil servant dubbed Thierry took the legal action when his passport photo was rejected, claiming that the corners of his mouth were raised, but that he wasn’t smiling.
- Thierry’s lawyer argued that a smile on ID cards would give the French people a morale boost.
- Although he lost the case, Thierry says he now has an “army of smiles” at his side.
