Franz Ferdinand – Assassinated 100 years today

100 years today Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.

  • On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip while visiting Sarajevo.
  • While this did not directly cause World War 1, it provided an opportunity to leaders in Vienna and Berlin to alter the balance of power in Europe.
  • World War 1 commenced on 28 July 1914 and ended on 11 November 1918.
  • By the end of the war, 4 major power ceased to exist – the German, Russian, Austro-Hunagarian and the Ottoman empires.
