- Divers have recovered material from the wreckage of 17th century Swedish gunship The Kronan including a dairy product they believe to be 340-year-old cheese!
- Lars Einarsson, the marine archeologist who led ‘The Kronan Project’ said the cheese smelled like a mix of yeast and Roquefort and “seemed to be alive”.
- The Kronan, which was the largest ship of its time, sank in the Baltic Sea in 1676.
- According to Einarsson, the low salinity of the sea and the fact that the ship sank in clay helped to preserve the cheese, which was sealed in a pewter canister.
- Einarsson does not think anyone will taste the 340-year-old cheese.
- The cheese has been sent to a lab, with results expected in a week.
