Drink your coffee black?
I’ve got some bad news…
According to a new study, people with a preference for bitter tastes (ie black coffee, celery, beer and tonic water) are more likely to be psychopaths!
In the test, participants were asked to rate sweet, salty, bitter and sour items while answering personality questionnaires and a “Comprehensive Assessment of Sadistic Tendencies” to assess their personality for traits such as psychopathy and narcissism.
One such question was: “Given enough provocation, I may hit someone”.
- The results of the study showed bitter taste preferences to be “positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust relation to everyday sadism and psycopathy”.
- However, concerns have been raised by Gizmodo who say that participants were asked about their taste preferences rather than being given something to taste-test. On this basis, Gizmodo suggests that our perceptions of what we do and don’t like might differ from our actual preferences.
The study was published in the scientific journal Appetite.
