- Samsung’s privacy policy for its range of Smart TVs warns that use of the voice recognition software will cause spoken words to be “among the data captured and transmitted to a third party”.
- The voice recognition software allows users to control the TV through voice commands.
- Privacy campaigners argue this is unacceptable and that it leaves users with no knowledge or control of where the information goes, who has access to it, and for what purpose.
- It is argued that this effectively allows Samsung to spy on people, which is reminiscent of 1984 by George Orwell.
- Samsung responded by saying that it takes consumer privacy seriously and employs, among other things, data encryption to protect personal information, adding that third parties are required to execute voice commands and that people may disable this feature.
- The South Korean company said it will amend the statement in the privacy policy to better clarify what actually happens.
