- McDonald’s has shut down a proposal by Burger King to “end the beef, with beef” and create a “peace-loving” burger called the McWhopper to promote Peace Day.
- In an open letter published in the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, Burger King proposed a ceasefire on their “burger wars” to get together and create a burger made from the best bits of the Big Mac and the Whopper to promote the campaign by non-profit organisation Peace One Day to make International Day of Peace, September 21 an annual day of global unity.
- According to the proposal, the McWhopper was to be made and sold for one day only at a pop-up store in a car park between McDonald’s and Burger King in Atlanta Georgia, with all proceeds going to Peace One Day.
- In reply, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said the cause was a good idea, but that the brands could do something bigger to make a difference – and that a “simple phone call will do next time”.
- OUCH.
