- Treasurer, Joe Hockey, has suggested removing the freeze on the indexation of fuel excise, which would raise $2 billion over 4 years.
- In response to concerns this would have on the cost of living, he said the wealthy would likely wear the brunt as poor people either don’t have cars or don’t drive very far.
- Opposition members have argued this is incorrect, as poor people are often located in rural areas, with no access to public transport, and need a car to get to work, the hospital etc.
