- Scientists have analysed ancient cadavers to find conclusive evidence of our cannibalistic ancestors during the ‘Magdalenian period’ approximately 14,700 years ago.
- The study was carried out by the National History Museum, University College London and a number of Spanish universities, using remains discovered at Gough’s Cave in Somerset UK.
- Chillingly, the scientists found evidence of “defleshing”, human chewing and the “cracking of bones to extract marrow”, with the presence of tooth marks on many of the bones (eeek).
- As a result, it was concluded that our predecessors had a “sophisticated” system of butchering, carving and eating human remains, with the ritual use of skull-caps.
- Further studies will be carried out to determine whether this ritualistic cannibalism was confined to the region or throughout the Magdalenian world.
