- Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov has launched his hot air balloon from a field outside Northam, Western Australia in a bid to set a record for flying around the world non-stop.
- The current record is 13 days, set by North American adventurer Steve Fosset, who commenced his journey from the same field in 2002.
- The 170-foot tall balloon, which weighs 1.6 metric tonnes, is expected to drift 19,000 miles (30,500 km) during the flight across Australia, New Zealand, Chile Argentina and South Africa before returning to Australia
